How the Foundation Works

Gifts to the Westwood Foundation last forever.  The Foundation holds the principal of such gifts in perpetuity, oversees the investment portfolio, and grants the income growth to support the mission and outreach of Westwood Lutheran Church.

The Foundation’s investments are with Thrivent Foundation.

Why does our church need a foundation?

The Westwood Foundation provides financial resources that support and enhance the church’s outreach and ministry programs, not addressed in the church’s operating budget.

Why is the Foundation separate from the church?

The Foundation was established to receive and manage gifts and bequests that serve and enhance the ministry of our congregation now and into the future.

How can gifts be made?

Individuals may contribute cash, stocks, securities, personal property, etc. as well as planned gifts, bequests and will provisions, charitable trusts, gift annuities, and paid-up life insurance policies.

What is an endowment?

An endowment is a permanent fund, where only investment earnings are spent — not the principal sums. Endowment gifts become a means of supporting the work and ministry of WLC forever.

Can gifts be given in honor or memory of someone?

We are happy to acknowledge gifts made in honor of or in memory of individuals. Gifts can be designated to the fund of your choice.

How does the Foundation invest the gifts it receives?

Gifts are invested to maximize investment performance. The current asset allocation strategy is a mix of of funds invested in equities and fixed income.

What does the Foundation do with the gifts it receives?

The Foundation directs your gifts for the purpose you specify. The Foundation staff works closely with donors to ensure the highest standards of integrity when investing and spending your gifts.
